Batting titles in the early days of baseball were awarded on a somewhat idiosyncratic basis and, in some cases, there are players who meet modernly-applied minimum requirements to qualify for and win a batting title, but who were not awarded the title at the time. In other cases, subsequent research has discovered that a different player to the batting title winner had the higher batting average that season.

In cases like this we bold the batting average of both the batting title winner and the actual statistical leader. For example, in the 1910 American League, Ty Cobb, who was awarded the batting title at the time, and Nap Lajoie, who was later shown to have the higher average, both have their batting average bolded.

The Batting Title itself is listed with the player who was awarded the title at the time, which in this case was Cobb.
