Major League Baseball does not credit interim managers with wins and losses when the manager is expected to return to the role. For example, Torey Lovullo was the interim manager of the Red Sox at the back end of the 2015 season due to John Farrell stepping away for health reasons. However, as Farrell returned to the role for the 2016 season, the wins and losses during his time away went on Farrell's ledger.

In 2026, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts missed a game to attend a family event. As above, the result went on Roberts' record rather than the interim manager's record.

A different case is Miguel Cairo in 2022 with the White Sox. Cairo took over as interim manager from Tony La Russa, who was attending to his health. Originally the wins and losses were credited to La Russa. However, La Russa then retired at the end of the season. As he did not return to the role, the wins and losses in his absence were instead credited to Cairo.
