Super Bowl Tallies by Player

Super Bowl Tallies by Player

Overview

The banners in the upper right portion of a player page lists career achievements, including Super Bowl titles won. Because there is no league-wide standard for who receives a Super Bowl ring, the titles shown on a player's page will not always match the number of rings that player actually owns.

What counts as a championship on Pro Football Reference

Pro Football Reference credits a player with a Super Bowl championship only if the player appeared in a regular season or postseason game during that Super Bowl season.

Appearances that do not qualify:

  • Preseason games only
  • Being under contract or on the roster without appearing in a game
  • Honorary or ceremonial roster additions

Why rings and championships can differ

Teams decide on their own who gets a ring. Rings are frequently given to players who were injured, who joined the roster late, or who are being recognized for past contributions to the franchise, none of which require having played that season. Since Pro Football Reference's criterion is game participation, some ring recipients will not show a championship at the top of the player page.

Examples

Deuce McAllister — 2009 Saints

The Saints signed McAllister to their playoff roster as a player-captain in January 2010, though he had not appeared in a game since the 2008 season. He received a ring for the Super Bowl-winning 2009 season, but he did not play in a regular season or postseason game that year, so no championship appears on his page.

Trent Green — 1999 Rams

After Green suffered a season-ending injury in the 1999 preseason, Kurt Warner took over at quarterback and led the Rams to the Super Bowl title. The Rams awarded Green a ring, but because his only action that season came in the preseason, the championship is not listed on his page.

Summary

A missing Super Bowl title on a player page is not necessarily an error. If a player is known to have a ring but shows no championships won, check whether he appeared in a regular season or postseason game that year. If he did not, then that is the reason he isn't credited with the Super Bowl.
