Winnipeg Jets Category in Immaculate Grid Hockey

Winnipeg Jets (aka Why Doesn't Teemu Selänne Work for This Category?)

Immaculate Grid players sometimes ask why former Winnipeg Jets players (usually Teemu Selänne) aren't accepted as correct answers. This is an understandable question, as Teemu Selanne definitely did play on a team called the Winnipeg Jets. In official NHL continuity, however, the modern-day Winnipeg Jets aren't the same as the Winnipeg Jets that existed from 1972 to 1996 (1972 to 1979 in the WHA and 1980 to 1996 in the NHL).

In some cases, when a team relocates but the original location eventually gets a team back, they retain the historical records of the previous team (such as the Cleveland Browns in the NFL, who retain the old Browns' records despite technically being a new version of the franchise founded in 1999). However, in this case, the modern-day Winnipeg Jets retain the history of the Atlanta Thrashers, who were the expansion team that would eventually relocate to Winnipeg, but not the history of the original Jets, who went on to become the Phoenix/Arizona Coyotes. Adding to the confusion, the Utah Mammoth are now considered an expansion franchise that doesn't retain the history of the Jets/Coyotes, despite relocating to Utah from Phoenix and maintaining much of the Coyotes' roster.

The good news is that Immaculate Grid players don't have to memorize all of this arcane information when filling out the grid. By clicking on the team logo, you can see which teams and which years are accepted as answers for that square.
